Howard University has a multifaceted approach to advancing AGEP’s mission. In doing so, the Graduate School has partnered with the Office of Faculty Development, the Graduate Student Council, Center for Excellence in Teaching Learning and Assessment (CETLA) , the Graduate Chairs and Directors, the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Postdoctoral Services, and Dr. Stacie LaSure. All of these relationships proved instrumental in delivering and disseminating programs to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that improve climate on campus.

Specifically, the University offered a series of interactive workshops to STEM and Social Sciences graduate students designed to promote bias literacy. These workshops covered core concepts on the topics of imposter syndrome, privilege beyond the color line, microagression, identity development, stereotype threat, and implicit or unconscious bias.

In addition, Howard University piloted a peer mentoring program which is expected to expand into a multiyear initiative that pairs advanced level PhD student mentors with early-level PhD student mentees in an effort to foster positive outcomes, such as the readiness to navigate a PhD program and other career-related goals. All mentors were required to go through extensive training, which included an online mentoring course and a bias literacy program.
